Year 3

Mr Jones

Class 3J has 25 students – 11 boys and 14 girls.

At the beginning of this year in science we started with the topic 'Life is a Cycle' and 'A Closer Look'. During our studies we carried out experiments which included the creation of ant farms and the life cycle of Sea Monkeys. In most cases our ant farms were successful, showing us how ants live underground. However our Sea Monkey experiment was not so successful. We carried out the experiment twice but were unable to grow Sea Monkeys. We are still unsure why the experiment did not work, but we know it wasn't through a lack of trying.

We are going to look at three other topics this year including; 'Inside my Body', 'Sounds Great' and 'A Useful Attraction'. Wherever possible a hands-on approach will be taken throughout these topics.

The students have been looking at Narratives this term in English. This text type was chosen for this term due to the NAPLAN tests, which all of 3J have now completed.

Next term we will be looking at Procedures and Exposition. As part of this unit we will be making a class cook book. This would work by each week a student is selected to bring in something from home that they have cooked. They also need to bring in the recipe (procedure) they followed. The class then gets to sample the food and write up the recipe. At the end of the term all the recipes are placed into a book that each student will get to take home.

Every Monday and Wednesday mornings 3J will be doing daily PE as part of our PDHPE unit. This is designed to promote healthy living and to assist them in developing their fine motor skills, such as hand-eye coordination and also to encourage team work and good sportsmanship.

This year we are putting a great deal of focus on times tables in Maths. 3J have already started learning their 1, 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables. This term we will be looking at our 4, 6 and 7 times tables. The class enjoy singing along to our times tables songs and playing times tables games.
